Glossary
A call fails and carries an error code; recurring failures form patterns with a root cause; a session's experience is summarized by detections.
A call fails; what it returns is an error. Error codes classify the errors failed calls returned.
Session friction
- tool call failure
- The call returned an error instead of a result.
- no reply
- The call went out and nothing came back.
- repeated call
- The agent sent the same call with the same arguments two or more times in one task, whether or not it failed.
- unrecovered failure
- A tool call failed and that tool never succeeded again in this task.
- feature gap
- The agent's stated goal needed a tool this surface does not offer.
- missing bulk API
- The agent called a single-item tool over and over in one task, or said it was working on several things at once, and the surface has no bulk version of that tool.
Tool call error codes
- not found
- The thing the call named does not exist.
- invalid argument
- A parameter was malformed or not allowed.
- permission denied
- The user's account is not allowed to do this.
- upstream error
- The system behind the tool failed.
- schema violation
- The response did not match the shape the tool declared.
- unclassified
- The error matched no known code.
Root causes
- rule buried in docs
- The rule that prevents this error exists in the server's own documentation, but agents don't have it in front of them when they write the call.
- server knows the answer
- The server knows the correct answer at rejection time, but tells the agent to go look it up instead.
- upstream error
- Not fixable by wording. The tool itself fails. Needs the owning team.
- access / config
- The user's account lacks the permission or configuration for this operation. No server wording change can fix it.
- error offers no remedy
- The error names the value it rejected but not the values it accepts, so the agent's next call is another guess.
- error states the rule
- The server's error names the parameter and the form it expects. The agent needed that before it called, not after.
